  • "Got invited for lunch by my boss. His office is 300 km away (in another city) and he's going back right after lunch. Is it a red flag?"

  • I work for a big engineering firm. My boss is basically making a big trip to my office, saying that he wants to see my city's office of the same company. He then wants to have lunch with me, and then he's going back to his own city.
  • The invitation was made through Teams with my supervisor and his own boss as witnesses. I, of course, agreed, but I am wondering what it's all about. If I weren't in the team, I'm 100% sure he would care to visit our office.

  • I've received a good performance review (from my supervisor), although they did want to give me new responsabilities that I could not take for family reasons (too much travelling) and that I respectfully declined. My supervisor seemed OK with that.

  • That being said, do bosses often invite employees for lunch to give bad news, ultimatums or to fire them? Am I reading too much into this? It is stressing me out a bit.
  • (BTW it's only in a week, so I won't be able to give you the definitive answer of what it was about until then. Sorry for leaving you hanging, in case.)
  • netvoyeur If you were getting the hook, I doubt it would be at lunch.
  • MidgetLoving Maxx I mean this respectfully, but unless something weird is going on, or you left something out, your position doesnt sound important enough for someone to travel 6 hours round trip to fire over lunch. Theyd just teams call you friday afternoon and be done with it.
  • Embarrassed_Flan_869 He isn't coming in and taking you to lunch to fire you. Your supervisor may have suggested you as an up and comer and wants to meet you. It could that or as innocent that he wants to meet someone working on whatever project.
  • Going to lunch is usually a good thing, especially with a boss from out of town.
  • frankydie69 Your boss isn't traveling all the way to your office just to fire you, he would just have someone else do it.
  • Next-Drummer-9280 You're not getting taken to lunch to get fired. You're turning yourself into a pretzel trying to figure out whatever nefarious intent you think your boss has. It's just lunch.
  • genxer I've got an employee about 200km away. Once or twice a year I'll go see them. Honestly, it is a good valid excuse to get out of the office. He isn't taking you out to lunch to fire you.
  • Alibeee64 No sense in worrying until it's time to worry. Maybe they're giving you a promotion and raise and taking you out to lunch to celebrate?
  • Stunning-Field-4244 Lunch is probably meant to encourage you to take on some traveling, not to fire you. You don't want witnesses to a firing.
  • Misspelled He probably wants to see your bellybutton. Wear a cute top and show off a little tummy. Unless you're a girl. Yuck.
  • rivers-end Every time this has happened to me, I was offered a promotion or was being considered for one.
  • Yiayiamary I think it's more likely he wants to revisit your promotion.
  • Far-Albatross-2799 You don't let people go over lunch, you do it in the office with a HR rep. He probably has noticed your work and wants to talk about your career and stuff.
  • lawnguylandlolita I can't predict the future but this reads to me more as "I'd like to discuss further opportunities with you"
  • notthemama58 This, and if they were planning on ousting you, they'd just do it, not wait a week. There would be no benefit to them. Maybe he just wants to meet you in person in a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • PoeticallyCorrect44 This. The only times my boss ever took me to lunch was because they needed me to go somewhere for several weeks (or months) and they wanted to discuss it outside the office where there's more time and privacy.
  • CJsopinion I wouldn't worry. You could always ask your supervisor if there's something information you need to bring. That might tell you the reason for the meeting.
  • Joebroni1414 When you can be fired via a Zoom call, they wont bother with lunch. Lunch is usually a good sign, or at least a neutral sign, i bet like others said its to discuss those new responsibilities.
